Red Gauge was part of “Are We there Yet”,an exhibition that consisted of a series of unlikely cars and is referencing our on going journey through life, carrying our personal narratives and possessions (stuff) along the way.
The starting point for this car was a block of clay. I make the clay using a mix of recycled clay from the making of my domestic ware mixed with perlite and paper to make it strong but light. Once the clay part of the sculpture is fire once I rub in oxides and apply the coloured glazes. I then assemble the piece using brass rod and copper.
"I always try to include something functional in my sculptures. With these cars, I enjoyed the challenge of making them actually move — a functioning element drawing attention to just how non-functional the object really is."
