Roll Cage

$1500

Roll Cage was part of Are We There Yet, an exhibition featuring a series of unlikely cars referencing our ongoing journey through life — carrying our personal narratives and possessions, our stuff, along the way.

Brendan likes to think laterally when making sculpture and humour is a big part of that. Using the idea of a roll cage, the use of the elements in this piece make us question whether our stuff is keeping us safe or actually trapping us.

The clay blocks and base are made by combining recycled clay — off-cuts from his domestic ware — with perlite and paper, creating a material that is both strong and light. After the first firing, Brendan rubs in oxides and applies coloured glazes before a second firing. The finished pieces are then assembled using brass rods.

"I always try to include something functional in my sculptures. With these cars, I enjoyed the challenge of making them actually move — a functioning element drawing attention to just how non-functional the object really is."
